The AGU meetings have, since the project’s inception in 2012, been the venue of choice for highlighting NGEE Arctic research. Every year members of the project submit dozens of abstracts and organize multiple sessions that showcase our progress and accomplishments. This year was no exception as more than 45 abstracts and 5 organized oral sessions were submitted by team members across our partners at four national laboratories, the University of Alaska Fairbanks, and our many national and international collaborators. A booklet, also prepared each year, provides easy access to knowledge derived from field, laboratory, and modeling studies. Organized oral sessions, which involve NGEE Arctic researchers exploring new areas of science span a range of topics including “Observations, Interactions, and Implications of Permafrost Systems in Transition” and “Characterizing Spatial and Temporal Variability of Hydrological and Biogeochemical Processes Across Scales”. This latter session, co-organized by LBNL’s Bhavna Arora and Haruko Wainwright focused on spatial and temporal patterns in biogeochemical variables, implement such variability in process-based models, and/or document the extent that hot spots/moments influence larger-scale system functioning. The goal was to highlight this topic across critical ecological systems and consider how best to quantify the significance of incorporating this emergent behavior in reactive transport models.
