The ORNL NGEE Arctic Data Management Team (DMT) is lending expertise and tools deployed for the NGEE Arctic data effort to the NGEE Tropics project. The DMT has deployed a multi-faceted system for NGEE Arctic comprised of the On-line Metadata Editor (OME), data submission capabilities, a searchable catalog (i.e., an NGEE Arctic Mercury instance), and DOI generation and registration services. The OME allows NGEE Arctic investigators to document their measurements or model packages and submit files and documentation to the NGEE Arctic Archive. The resulting OME standards-based metadata is then harvested and cataloged by the Mercury tool. The catalog is accessible from and easily queried from the NGEE Arctic website. The metadata captured using the OME tool, along with the submitted files and documentation and the results page emanating from the Mercury query, provides the necessary elements to assign and register a DOI to an NGEE Arctic data set or model package. The NGEE Arctic data system is based on open-source codes and widely-used metadata standards and is easily modified for use by other projects. The ORNL NGEE Arctic DMT has recently deployed an OME and data submission system for the NGEE Tropics project. These elements were customized according to guidance provided by the NGEE Tropics DMT and Executive Council (EC). Future plans call for similar leveraging efforts to deploy an NGEE Tropics Mercury instance and DOI registration service. Once implemented, users will be able to search across the entire NGEE collection while maintaining the integrity of the project-level collections.
